Finally, APC To Hold NEC Meeting Oct. 31

After several postponements, the All Progressives Congress has scheduled October 31 as the date for its National Working Committee meeting.

The meeting is aimed at working out modalities for its national convention.

A party source told our correspondent, in Abuja, late on Monday that after due consultations with party stakeholders, the Chief John Odigie-Oyegun-led National Working Committee of the party had scheduled the date for the party’s much-awaited NEC meeting.

The meeting is to be preceded by the party’s National Caucus meeting which is expected to put together the agenda for the NEC meeting.

When contacted, the APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, confirmed the development.

When asked whether the party had fixed a date for its NEC meeting, he simply said, “Yes, we are looking at (October) the 31st.”

This is coming at a time tension is growing within the party’s rank and file over the management of the party’s affairs.

It was learnt that the party’s inaugural bi-annual national convention would top the agenda of the NEC meeting.

The report of the various fact-finding and reconciliation committees in states where crises exist is also being considered for discussions.

Several party leaders including Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, have voiced their frustrations about the way the party is being run.

The party’s interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, had some few days ago declared that the party’s presidential ticket for the 2019 poll was open to all who wish to contest.

His pronouncement which was dismissed as a personal opinion by Odigie-Oyegun was in direct contrast to a series of endorsements of President Muhammadu Buhari for re-election by some state chapters of the party mostly based in the North.

Calls to the mobile telephone number of the party’s National Chairman on Monday night indicated that it was switched off. A response to a text message sent to him on the subject of the proposed meeting was still being awaited as of the time to filing this report at 9:30pm.
