Tragedy Struck in Benin As Gunmen Reportedly Shot Dead Husband of a Journalist in Edo State
Mr. Okunkpolor Osatohamwen Von, was murdered while at work in a popular hotel, Upper Sokpomba Area in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.
It was learnt that the hoodlums who stormed the hotel, wounded some guests with broken bottles, before they opened fire at the 43-year-old Okunkpolor.
Terrified guests who sat at the relaxation spot in the hotel, temporarily fled the scene after they heard gunshots, leaving the victim in the pool of his own blood.
The gunmen were said to have disappeared before police operatives attached to Ugbekun Division, came to remove dead body of the father of two Children.
Widow of the deceased, Mrs. Anita Otasowie Okunkpolor who works with one of the frontline Newspapers based in Edo State, wept uncontrollably during a condolence visit by the leadership of Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) on Monday.
But, her elder Sister, Mrs. Stella Maikudi, said she stumbled on his brother’s in-law’s death on Monday February 19, 2019 at about 1:20am.
She said the Facebook post by unidentified person was littered with facetious red herring, and captioned Okunkpolor Von “murdered in cold blood”.
According to her, the sad news set them on panicky mood to proceed to the hotel where her close family members were consequently advised to take his wife home before going to the Central hospital to identify the Corps of late Okunkpolor.
“At about 5am. Anita came to meet me in my apartment and informed me that she received a phone call from anonymous caller that her husband has been shot dead”.
Spokesman of Edo State Police. Command, DSP Chidi Nwanbuzor confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with our Correspondent on Monday.
He said the late Okunkpolor during a fight by two rival cult groups (Aye and Eye) at the premises of the hotel on Sunday February 17, 2019.
He said in a hotel located in Erediauwa Street, Upper Sokponba road in Benin.
According to him, “I don’t’ know if his a husband of a journalist.
“Two rival groups (Aye and Eiye) engaged themselves in a shoot out at the premises of the hotel; The manager, was hit by a bullet and unfortunately, he died”.
Asked if Police have arrested any suspect in connection with the killing, he said: “The Police is on top of the situation”.
The Chairman of Council, Sir. Roland Osakue NUJ who led the delegation to immediate family of deceased in Benin, called for an independent inquiry into the alleged murder.
He also prayed for the distraught widow and Children.
Upper Sokpomba has been a flashpoint for decades in the State.
