PDP Condemns Plans By INEC, APC to Postpone February 16th Elections

BENIN – THE Edo state chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the purported plan by INEC and APC/Edo state government to postpone the February 16 elections in some parts of the state.
The PDP said the areas likely to be affected are Akoko-edo, Etsako, Ovia, Esan N/East and Esan S/East, Orhionmwon/Uhonmwonde federal constituencies.
Addressing journalists at the party secretariat in Benin City, the State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Nehikhare said the PDP is well ready to go for a free, fair and transparent election baring all unforeseen circumstances.
He said reports received in the last few days from APC members covertly working with the party in collaboration with Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) indicate that the both the commission and Edo APC have prefected plans to postpone the elections.
He added that the reason for this mischievous plan is to create room for stand alone elections, “in order to use security agencies to harass and manipulate results in areas they are unpopular so that their candidates can be elected either by hook or crook”.
Nehikhare who said they have equally concluded plans to deploy APC thugs so that elections can be postponed in most areas however urged the electoral umpire not to give in to this sinister plan but to ensure that polls hold simultaneously across the state.
“We are relying on the good people of Edo state to determine who their leaders will be. We have no interest to instigate anyone but what we want them to do is to use their PVC to vote without any form of intimidation or harassment”,said Nehikhare.
He also stated that the Edo state government has mobilised APC members working as Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) to be part of the security apparatus for the polls.
To avoid mayhem, the state publicity secretary advised the state government to only allow only federal security agencies to provide security during the election.
“No APC member wearing uniforms will be allowed into any pollling units in Edo state and there will be crisis if government goes ahead with their clandestine plans” he noted.
On the allegations that the PDP was mobilising and arming youths in some areas of Ovia, the SPS called on those who raised the issue to come out with facts so that security agencies can bring perpetrators to book.
Responding to the question of alleged plans to arrest top PDP leaders because they may have amassed funds ahead of the polls, he said it is APC that should for the purpose of funding their election, “arrest and prosecution should start from them”, he queried.
